WELCOMING ADDRESS

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee it is a great pleasure to invite you to the 2nd Mediterranean Experts Meeting on “Vitamin D in the prevention of health disparities during adult life” in Thessaloniki. What started as an idea between friends became a friendly exchange of scientific ideas in last year’s first meeting and is evolving to a world class scientific event due to the generous contributions of all the distinguished members of the scientific committee.

Research in the Vitamin D field is booming and has formed the scientific idea of a molecule that resembles a hormone more than a vitamin with actions that extend well beyond its established musculoskeletal role. Moreover, the “Mediterranean Paradox” of vitamin D deficiency prevalent in a large part of the population in countries with ambient sunshine makes the collaboration among scientists of these countries necessary. We need to join forces to understand the magnitude of the problem and the magnitude of the disorders that may relate to this problem. The big attendance and great success of last year’s meeting was a motivation to move a step forward and open the second meeting to scientists from all over the world.

This year we invite in Thessaloniki everybody who wants to contribute in Vitamin D research to share with us ideas and enthusiasm. Thessaloniki is the perfect host city. It is a seductive metropolitan city that over the centuries has been the crossroads of different people and ideas. The meeting is open to abstract submission and research presentations.

Join us in August and let us introduce you to the Mediterranean spirit and the Greek hospitality!

Kalliopi Kotsa
Ass. Professor in Endocrinology-Diabetes
Medical School, Aristotle University Thessaloniki

About Thessaloniki

About Thessaloniki

The city of Thessaloniki is a vibrant modern metropolis. Built on the waters of the North Aegen sea, the city and its 1 million inhabitants are renowned for their hospitality and easy going lifestyle. Thessaloniki is the second biggest city in Greece and a regional business hub and shopping centre with an active commercial port, a significant local industrial activity, and the largest academic and research community in the country. It takes a walk on the "paralia" -the longest urban waterfront in Europe- to relax and feel the charm of this unique Greek city. The city is easy to explore. You can go anywhere in about 30 minutes. A modern International airport is just 15 km to the east, a railway station is in walking distance from the city centre, buses and taxis are trustworthy and inexpensive -everything in Thessaloniki puts you at ease. The climate is no exeption: typically Mediterranean with warm-to-hot summers, mild winters and an annual average of 300 days of sunshine.
History Of Thessaloniki

History Of Thessaloniki

From the ancient Greek Symposium to the meetings and events of present day, people convene to exchange ideas and goods, and they transform the world as they do so...At the crossroads of East and West, the city of Thessaloniki has been witnessing these transformations for millennia as a proud host of great people and historic events. Today, the capital of the region of Macedonia and the second largest Greek city. Thessaloniki, is a significant business hub for Southeast Europe and a remarkable place to visit. Thessaloniki offers a wide range of attractions -modern art and history museums, ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman monuments, exhibitions, galleries, spas, restaurants, taverns and coffee shops; along with their unique exhibits and style, they all offer a rare combination of relaxation, safety and entertainment, the sine qua non elements for a succesful conference destination.

An impressive mix of gastronomic cultures, a rich and varied nightlife, a great history to explore on every step of the way. Do not forget to try the wines! Don’t rush. Walk. Thessaloniki’s chilled-out attitude is your passport to true relaxation: admire the magnificence of the sea while drinking a coffee at one of the local cafés; catch impro jazz sounds or alternative beats at the hip downtown bars; sample delicious Mediterranean dishes at one of the many picturesque tavernas... Just take your time and enjoy! Every experience in Thessaloniki starts with a “kalimera” (good morning) and a big bright smile!
